Top 5 Resources to Learn Serbian on Your Own

YouTube- Serbian Language Channels

YouTube is my favorite source for learning new skills. From how to fix my dishwasher to brushing up on my knowledge of German. There are a few YouTube channels that offer great content if you want to study the Serbian language. My recommendations are Relaxing SerbianMože Kafa PodcastMoje Blu, and, of course, our own Go Speak Serbian channel.

YouTube- Other Channels

Do not restrict yourself to Learn-Serbian-as-a-foreign-language channels only. YouTube has lots of Serbian cartoons, films, and TV shows. These are excellent tools to help you improve your Serbian language skills. If you are at a beginner or pre-intermediate level, you can start with cartoons. Cartoon in Serbian is a “crtani film”. So search for “crtani film” (singular) or “crtani filmovi” (plural), and pick any cartoon you like. If you speak the Serbian language at a pre-intermediate level or above, you can also search for some TV shows. My suggestions are: Otvorena vrataAndrija i AnđelkaLjubav Navika Panika, and Jutro će promeniti sve. If the video has subtitles, switch them on, they can help you if the spoken language is too fast or unclear.

Serbian movies are great too if you already have a solid grasp of the language. You can search for movies like: Kad porastem biću KengurLajanje na zvezdeMi nismo anđeliMontevideoMunjeThey are all fun and offer great exposure to the real, spoken Serbian language (with some amazing slang!).

Finally, there are YouTube influencers as well! Their videos are fun and relatable and often have subtitles enabled. Are you interested in make-up? Then search “šminka za svaki dan” (make-up for every day). If you like fitness, search for ” vežbe za stomak” (ab exercises), or if you like cooking, check out “recept za palačinke” (pancake recipe).
Two girls looking at online resources for studying the Serbian Language

Instagram, Facebook, TikTok

The number of social media accounts for language learning is huge. Social media provide quick, fun, daily opportunities for interaction with the language. Instagram is the platform I use the most. I love TikTok (we are @gospeakserbian on TikTok) but still new there. So, here are my top picks for Serbian language learning on Instagram:

@aktivnisrpski (for Russian speakers who study Serbian language)

@serbo.per.italiani (for Italian speakers studying Serbian language)

and, our very own, @gospeakserbian

Two accounts that are not for Serbian language learning but relate to it are @bojan_jokanovic_ilustracije and @zmajast. You have to check them out– they are creative, fun, and they’ll also improve your Serbian.

Websites

There are a few websites with excellent reading materials, exercises, and grammar explanations. My top picks are:

Online Serbian Language Courses

Online courses are my absolute favorite resource for language or any other study! Online course platforms have video lessons, quizzes, study materials, and support groups. I have not tried any other Serbian language courses apart from our Go Speak Serbian courses (wink, wink), so I can’t offer any other recommendations. At the moment, we have beginner and pre-intermediate Serbian language courses. Each course has hours of video materials. Besides that, each course also has glossaries, workbooks, audio files, and quizzes! And, once you go through all the curriculum, you get a certificate!

You see you can even become a certified speaker of the Serbian language- all on your own!
